CKA Certification Guide: Cost, Exam Format, Domains and Validity
CKA — Certified Kubernetes Administrator — is the hands-on administrator certification created by CNCF in collaboration with The Linux Foundation.
It is designed to validate the skills needed to administer Kubernetes clusters through an online, proctored, performance-based exam.

Linux Foundation states that the CKA environment is aligned with the most recent Kubernetes minor version roughly 4–8 weeks after a Kubernetes release. That makes the version a high-change fact: verify it again immediately before the exam.
What is CKA?
The Certified Kubernetes Administrator program was created by CNCF in collaboration with The Linux Foundation to validate Kubernetes administration skills.
The exam is practical. Instead of only selecting answers, candidates solve tasks from the command line in a Kubernetes environment.

Who is CKA for?
CKA fits people whose work includes:
- operating Kubernetes clusters;
- configuring cluster components;
- managing workloads and scheduling;
- configuring services and networking;
- working with Kubernetes storage;
- troubleshooting cluster and workload problems.

What does the CKA exam cover?
CNCF currently publishes these domain weights:

The weighting matters for preparation. Troubleshooting plus cluster architecture/configuration together represent more than half of the published domain weight, so a prep plan that focuses mostly on memorizing object syntax is incomplete.
Is CKA difficult?
There is no useful universal difficulty score.
CKA is demanding because it combines technical breadth with timed execution. You need to recognize what a problem is asking, choose the right Kubernetes object or command, make the change, and verify that the cluster is in the requested state.
Readiness depends heavily on hands-on practice.
A good self-test is whether you can:
- create and modify Kubernetes resources quickly;
- diagnose why workloads are not healthy;
- understand service/networking behavior;
- work with storage resources;
- navigate cluster configuration and troubleshoot failures;
- use permitted documentation efficiently without turning every task into a search exercise.

How much does CKA cost?
CNCF and Linux Foundation currently list the CKA exam-only price at $445.

Does CKA have prerequisites?
CKA itself currently has no prerequisite.
That differs from CKS. Linux Foundation's certification FAQ states that CKS is the exception to its general no-prerequisite rule: CKS candidates must have taken and passed CKA before attempting CKS.
You can therefore take CKA without first holding KCNA or another certification.
How long is CKA valid?
The current CKA product page lists certification validity as two years.
Linux Foundation's general renewal route is to retake and pass the certification exam before expiration. CARE adds another current option for people who progress to CKS.
As of 2026-08-21, if you previously earned CKA and then achieve or recertify CKS on or after June 18, 2026, CARE can automatically renew or reinstate CKA and align its expiration date with the new CKS certification.
This rule is date-specific and subject to change. Verify the CARE page before relying on it for recertification planning.
Is CKA worth it?
CKA is worth considering when the role you want requires hands-on Kubernetes administration and you want a vendor-neutral way to validate that skill.
It is not a guarantee of employment, promotion or salary.
The credential is a weaker fit if:
- you only need conceptual Kubernetes familiarity;
- your role is primarily application development rather than cluster administration;
- you are not planning to develop the hands-on skills the exam actually tests.

Current Kubernetes version matters
The CKA exam changes with Kubernetes.
As of 2026-08-21, Linux Foundation lists Kubernetes v1.35 for CKA and says the exam environment generally moves to the latest minor release within about 4–8 weeks of that release.
Do not prepare against a version number from an old course or blog post without checking the current CKA page.
